Networking Technologies
Developing advanced networks and applications.
CSIRO experts in networking technology are designing user-centric technology to underpin the networked world.
The group comprises a multidisciplinary team with deep expertise in the practical and theoretical aspects of communications networks and services. This work has been applied to telemedicine, tele-operations, teleconferencing and telecollaboration over secure systems.

Our capabilities
We have built impressive advanced networking infrastructure allowing us to work on networking technologies that would not be possible on contemporary consumer grade networks.
Our researchers are responding to the question: what could people and organisations do once network restrictions such as capacity, reach and cost are removed?
Our research expertise spans:
- human interaction and collaboration : understanding real-world use of technology through ethnographic study and evaluating technologies in use.
- immersive environments : developing virtual and mixed (augmented) reality displays, coupled with novel human-computer interfaces and specialist techniques such as touch (haptics) to produce high tech applications ready for use as medical diagnostic tools or teleoperations systems in mining.
- collaborative tools : building systems that enable distributed teams to work together effectively through blended spaces and shared interaction systems.
- communications networking science : improving quality of service across networks, developing new protocols that optimise bandwidth use.
- trust and security : devising systems to facilitate trusted, dynamic collaboration between multiple parties, new security devices and developing secure protocols.
- computer vision and machine learning : using advanced mathematical and computational techniques to enable computers to recognise human movement and facial expressions such as pain.
Our strength is in applying these futuristic capabilities to address real world needs.
Applications
For several decades CSIRO has been conducting research to improve advanced networks and applications.
Highlights include:
- leading the Centre for Networking Technologies for the Information Economy (2001-2007)
- commercialisation of our award-winning Virtual Critical Care Unit technology
- development of the EchoCardiographic Healthcare Online Networking Expertise in Tasmania (ECHONET) system, a broadband telemedicine system supporting intensive care units in rural hospitals
- Working with healthcare professionals, we have developed the Remote Immersive Diagnostic Examination System (RIDES)
- commercialisation of our trust extension device that enables users to do business across the internet in a trusted manner from any computer.
