Information Engineering
The Information Engineering Lab develops science, technology and architectures for finding, combining, managing and delivering services and information in a useful, trusted and secure way.
The IE Lab has been and continues to be the top web research laboratory in Australia, and one of the leading research labs in the world. Its legacy in the recent years includes the spin off of two start-up companies: Funnelback and Semantic Sciences.
The IE Lab currently has five strong, internationally known research capabilities:
- Web Services (developing novel software infrastructure technologies and architectures for service delivery in the web).
- Human Systems Integration (producing advanced information personalization technology, and breaking new ground in mining high value information and social relationships from documents, communications, and other data).
- Semantic Data Management (developing semantic web technologies that utilize taxonomies or ontologies to efficiently find, integrate, and query information from distributed sources and sensors).
- Trust & Security
- Imaging & Computer Vision
Applications
It is estimated that in 2006 more data was created than in the previous 5000 years. The problem isn’t a lack of data, but rather how to discover, combine, and assimilate the information you need.
Services dominate the economies of most advanced countries, accounting for more than 75% of economic activity. They are increasingly delivered anytime, anywhere and over computer networks such as the Internet.
Information and services are thus becoming increasingly ubiquitous. As a result, our research has applications in many sectors, including:
- Human services
- Water management
- Environmental monitoring
- National security and government
- Electronic publishing
- eResearch
- Mining
Commercialisation success
Commercial outcomes included spinning off two companies:
- Funnelback P/L − providing web search solutions based on CSIRO's Panoptic™ enterprise search engine which outperforms its competitors
- Semantic Sciences P/L − creating and exploiting technologies for use by government and commerce to enable rapid analysis of historical and real-time data to yield high value actionable information.
