Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks are a new technology for collecting data about the natural or built environment. Our research is creating technologies that will radically improve the cost and quality of data gathering to enhance the understanding of our natural environments and provide the ability to manage and exploit Australia's resources.

CSIRO's Fleck™ Technology

Fleck inventor Dr Peter Corke

One of our key technologies is the Fleck™ series of wireless sensor nodes which were designed and proto-typed in the Autonomous Systems Laboratory, and have now been licenced to the Powercom Group for commercial production. The Fleck™ devices incorporate a number of novel design features that set them apart from other devices on the market: superior radio for outdoor applications, superior power supply that is solar-capable, and an extensive range of sensors and sensor interfaces.

We have also designed and developed the Fleck Operating System (FOS) as a cooperative thread-based operating system for the Fleck wireless sensor module. With the increase in complexity of sensor network applications, current development in FOS target an upgrade of the software to extend its support to other hardware platforms, enhance its networking stack, improve its API, and include new event abstractions. In parallel, we are developing online anomaly detection tools that can alert network operators and managers of specific issues in their deployment for better monitoring and maintenance of long-term deployments. These efforts are complemented by our ongoing development of over-the-air network reprogramming to enable easier code updates and upgrades for our deployments.
