Information Engineering
The Information Engineering Lab develops science, technology and architectures for finding, combining, managing and delivering services and information in a useful, trusted and secure way.
It is estimated that in 2006 more data was created than in the previous 5000 years. The problem isn’t a lack of data, but rather how to discover, combine, and assimilate the information you need.
Services dominate the economies of most advanced countries, accounting for more than 75% of economic activity. They are increasingly delivered anytime, anywhere and over computer networks such as the Internet.
Our research focuses on:
- Service computing
- Semantic web and semantic data management
- Sensor information management
- Information retrieval and tailored information delivery
Applications
Information and services are thus becoming increasingly ubiquitous. As a result, our research has applications in many sectors, including:
- Human services
- Water management
- National security and government
- Electronic publishing
- eResearch
Commercialisation success
Commercial outcomes included spinning off two companies:
- Funnelback P/L − providing web search solutions based on CSIRO's Panoptic™ enterprise search engine which outperforms its competitors
- Semantic Sciences P/L − creating and exploiting technologies for use by government and commerce to enable rapid analysis of historical and real-time data to yield high value actionable information.
